Remodeling your entire home is a great way to achieve your dream living spaces without having to move out. This project allows you to meet the current needs of your family while increasing the overall value of your property. Given its scope, however, it is important you prepare for it carefully. It can be time-consuming and stressful, which is why you have to know what to expect and how long it usually takes.
Home remodeling company Owens Construction shares the typical timeline of a whole-home remodel.
Your initial consultation with your contractor happens in the first week of the whole-home remodeling process. This is the time when you discuss your vision for your project and the goals you want to achieve for your home. The team will then check if the changes you want to see will be possible based on your home’s existing structure. During this phase, you and your contractor will also discuss the budget, material selections and even measurements, if applicable. Since this will be a massive undertaking, they’ll make sure to help you set your expectations for your remodel.
You and your chosen team of home remodeling contractors will then proceed to the design phase, which can last between six weeks to up to five months. Depending on the scope of your project, this will involve drawing up schematic plans, choosing material selections and specifications, and tweaking the budget. A lot of factors can be at play in this part of the process, which can either shorten or lengthen the timeline. The larger the remodel, the longer this phase will take.
Once everything discussed in the design phase is finalized, you’ll move into the contract signing. Be sure to read the contents carefully, including the agreed-upon budget, selections, specifications and start date, before signing on the dotted line. During this phase, which can take four to twelve weeks, your contractor will secure permits, order materials, and lock schedules. Your remodel will also be assigned to the project lead or manager. They’ll be your point of contact for the duration of the whole home remodel.
Once the prep is done, your project moves into the construction phase. Most of the work will take place here as discussed during the design phase. Regular meetings will also be called to discuss concerns and learn about the progress of the project. The timeline can vary depending on the size of your home, the complexity of the remodel, and the other circumstances that your project may encounter along the way like delays in material deliveries and change orders. Smaller whole-home remodels usually take between five to seven months, while bigger ones can take from six months up to a year.
All in all, expect your whole home remodel to be completed in about eleven months at the earliest. Again, however, the timeline from start to finish will still depend on whatever might happen over the course of the process. Your project will only be considered complete once the plans have been taken into account and the finished product undergoes a final and thorough inspection.
