Timeless designs are defined to be those that can stand the test of time, outlasting fads and trends. More than a statement, timeless designs require fewer changes over time, making them a great long-term investment. In today’s post, Owens Construction shares some of the ways that you can achieve a timeless look on your next home remodel.
- Choose natural materials. Materials like wood and stone have a timeless quality that never goes out of style. As they’re found in nature, the human brain regards them as more connected to nature, and therefore not associated with a specific design era. Natural materials are also durable and sustainable, and have much lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared to manufactured materials.
- Incorporate trendy but impermanent elements. Some visual interest is sometimes needed to make the room look exciting. Trendy pieces like statement furniture, striking art pieces or designer fixtures may sound contrary to the objective of timeless design, but they have one thing in common: they’re all impermanent. This means they can be changed to match the trend — or simply as you see fit.
- Avoid overly matching furniture and decor. A furniture layout with similar or even matching pieces can feel more like a showroom display than a real home — impersonal and manufactured. That is not to say that you should just pick random pieces of furniture and decor. Rather, there should be intent or an underlying theme with your choices.
- Invest in custom millwork. Custom millwork, headboards and cabinetry can add dimension, as well as help make the most out of the room. Designing custom pieces requires more thought, and therefore can become the elements that will ultimately set the look of the remodeling project.
- Use a neutral color palette as a base. A neutral palette is one of the defining traits of timeless design. However, you have to avoid the trap of making the interior space look dull by sticking to just neutral colors. The idea is to make the space look and feel lived-in, not staged. Don’t shy away from pops of color — whether it’s temporary like seating upholstery, or permanent like the backsplash or countertop material — to break an otherwise monotonous base color.
