However, there’s more to it than that, and knowing the differences can help set your expectations and make your renovation planning easier. Major vs. Minor Remodeling
Major remodeling projects are generally more extensive, and may involve knocking down walls, moving plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems, or even changing a room’s purpose altogether. In projects that require changes to the house or building’s structure, the remodeling plans may require permits and approval from a structural engineer, as the building needs to be code compliant.
In comparison, minor remodeling usually involves cosmetic changes to the room, retaining its structure. Some common examples of minor remodeling projects include interior painting, replacing cabinets, backsplashes and putting in new tile. In a minor bathroom remodel, you would replace the vanity with one of the same size, while in a major bathroom remodel, you would get a bigger vanity with new lighting, maybe even move it (along with corresponding changes to the plumbing) to a different spot.
